Cancer is a growing crisis in Tanzania, with over 42,000 new cases and 28,000 deaths annually. Poverty remains the greatest barrier to care, forcing patients—especially from rural areas—to travel 450–600 km to reach treatment. Once they arrive, many have no safe place to live while attending clinics, struggle to afford daily meals, and lack even the most basic patient kits such as sanitary pads or hygiene supplies. As a result, most patients experience delays in reaching treatment centers, many do not return for follow-up, and others face stigma when traveling on public buses particularly those suffering from cervical, colorectal, or breast cancer. In addition, the lack of nutritious meals undermines their ability to withstand comprehensive treatment such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, leading to poor outcomes. For families living in poverty, the burden of distance, cost, stigma, and lack of support makes accessing lifesaving care nearly impossible.

To make Giving Tuesday 2025 a day of compassion and unity — helping ensure that no cancer patient in Tanzania misses treatment due to lack of transport, food, or accommodation. 

Safari ya Tumaini (Journey of Hope) provides:

Thanks to the generosity of our community, the Feliciana Mshanga Memorial Cancer Foundation has been able to stand with and support those struggling with cancer as well as to provide funding for research for early detection.

1. Our Story

The Feliciana Mshanga Memorial Cancer Foundation (FMMCF) was founded to honor Mama Feliciana Mshanga, who passed away on January 2022, after a long battle with cancer.

During her treatment, she witnessed the stigma, delays in diagnosis, high costs, long travel distances, and lack of holistic support that burden Tanzanian cancer patients — especially those in rural areas. Despite her pain, she supported fellow patients with nutrition, comfort, and hope.

Before her passing, Mama Feliciana urged her family to create an institution that would continue this work, ensuring that no one faces cancer alone. Today, FMMCF carries forward her vision through awareness, screening, treatment support, research, vaccination, holistic care, and survivorship programs.

1. Community Awareness, Prevention & Vaccination

   • Conducts nationwide awareness campaigns on cancer prevention, early detection, and screening.

   • Promotes vaccination to prevent infection-related cancers.

   • Integrates education on viral infections linked to cancer

   • Produces the Cancer Talk podcast, featuring experts, survivors, and advocates sharing real stories, prevention education, and health insights.

   • Delivers capacity-building workshops for health workers and community health volunteers on screening, early detection, and patient referral.

2. Patient Support, Treatment & Navigation

   • Provides dignified transportation initiative for patients accessing treatment.

   • Supports invasive precancerous cell removal services (such as cryotherapy and thermal ablation) for early-stage patients, helping to prevent cancer progression.

   • Offers insurance coverage support to help patients access affordable, quality treatment and reduce out-of-pocket expenses.

   • Operates safe lodge accommodation for out-of-town patients and caregivers, ensuring a secure and compassionate stay during treatment.

   • Provides psychosocial counseling, financial aid, and navigation assistance from diagnosis through recovery.

3. Survivorship, Economic Empowerment & Education

   • Implements programs offering emotional, social, and spiritual support to survivors and families.

   • Provides vocational and entrepreneurship training to empower survivors with sustainable livelihoods.

   • Offers education scholarships to children and young adults affected by cancer, fostering hope and long-term empowerment.

While newly established, FMMCF has begun:

o   Launching awareness campaigns on cervical, breast, prostate, and childhood cancers.

o   Supporting patients with transportation, nutritional assistance, and hygiene kits.

o   Advocating for early screening and vaccination.

o   Engaging in global cancer awareness days i.e. World cancer cay, World ovarian cancer 

   day, Gynecological cancer awareness day, etc.).

o   Building a network of hospitals, survivor groups, and schools for future outreach.
